Product Focus: Quick EXAFS DCM
The new DCM on beamline B18 at Diamond which was designed & built by IDT has recently been used in Quick EXAFS mode.
The image to the right shows a Nickel foil QEXAFS scan taken by the B18 DCM (click image to zoom). The blue plot is a standard 50 min step scan (1-5s per point).
Red is a QEXAFS scan taken in 1 min (25ms per point).
There is essentially no difference between the two scans. The noise levels are the same
due to the ultra-stiff DCM mechanics. This data suggests normal EXAFS scans are possible in 20 seconds.

Highlights of B18 DCM:
- Energy range 2.05 - 35 keV
- Bounce-down geometry
- Dual Si(111) & Si(311)
crystal sets in single chamber with automated crystal exchange
- Step, quick & continuous scanning EXAFS & QEXAFS modes
- High precision ultra-stiff rotary table
- Novel 1st crystal cooling - heat load 44W
- Water cooling circuits run via central bore of main rotation table
- Full extraction of crystal cage on simple linear rails for maintenance
- High vacuum level (5x10-8 Torr)
- Very stable base block of natural granite
- EPICS control system
- Bragg drive upgrade planned for DC brushless servo motor

News Update: Small KB Mirror System*
Our Small KB Mirror system recently installed on
beamline I18 at Diamond has produced
excellent initial results, with a horizontal focus of
2.2μm and vertical focus of 1.3μm.
The newsletter of Diamond Light Source recently featured a report on the I18 Small KB Mirror system. The report can be viewed here.
IDT have also recently delivered two Small KB Mirror
systems to APS. The system on BM7 has been
successfully commissioned with beam.
Highlights of the IDT KB mirror system include:
- Lower cost of procurement & ownership compared to Bimorph mirror systems
- Sub micron beam spot size with mirror lengths up to 320mm
- Multiple mirror coatings with stripe translation mechanism
- Sub-micron RMS spot position stability during multi-hour beam operation
- Actuators with sub-micron repeatability
- Simple alignment procedure to beam reference frame
- Focus to sub-micron spot size in minutes
- Repeatable focus parameters after homing drives
- Flexible design to accommodate a range of mirror geometries and sample positions
- UHV, high vacuum & helium
variants available
See our product datasheet for more information.
* Developed by IDT with a grant from the UK North West Development Agency.
Canted Undulator Slits

IDT have developed our proven centre-opening & scanning primary slit mechanism for use in a canted geometry.
The slits are designed for 200mA operation at the APS and feature scanning of the undulator cone with a single motorised axis.
