IDT Update May 2016

APS Users Meeting

IDT will be attending the forthcoming APS Users Meeting at Argonne National Laboratory on 9 - 11 May 2016. We will be located at booth 29 in the lower level gallery.

Small KB Mirror System

The IDT Small KB Mirror system* is a compact, highly reliable and low cost system for micro-focusing monochromatic x-rays. The mirror system is available in UHV, high vacuum & helium variants, with mirror lengths up to 400mm now available. The Small KB Mirror system features:

Small KB Mirror System
  • Highly repeatable sub-μm focused spot size
  • Dynamic mirror figuring with sub-μrad slope error
  • Multiple mirror coatings (silicon, rhodium, platinum)
  • 2 moment elliptical bender with trapezoidal shaped mirrors for near-perfect bending
  • Various motor & control options
  • Low cost of procurement & ownership compared to other micro-focusing systems

Air-Bearing DCM

Air Bearing DCM

IDT have recently installed two air-bearing double crystal monochromators - one as part of the white beam components package for the SMI beamline at NSLS-II, and another on 9-BM at the APS. The 9-BM DCM, which is now in routine user operation and features a novel water cooling design, replaces a previous DCM.

We are also developing air-bearing monochromators for the XAS beamline at the Australian Synchrotron, and for the new XFM beamline at NSLS-II.

The air bearing DCM is capable of Quick EXAFS over a wide energy range. The combination of the air bearing goniometer* with our proven ultra-stiff crystal cage mechanics offers significant improvements over other mechanical goniometers:

  • Frictionless & ultra-smooth Bragg drive
  • Zero backlash
  • Very high radial stiffness
  • No degradation or wear over time, unlike a mechanical goniometer
  • High speed direct drive torque motor

The IDT air-bearing monochromators installed on GSECARS and MR-CAT at the APS continue to demonstrate outstanding operational performance. The stability of the GSECARS beamline, including the air-bearing DCM, has been measured as 54 nrad.

Experimental Tables

Experiemental Tables

IDT have developed a comprehensive range of experimental table configurations which can be used to provide a stable support to optical components, experimental equipment and diffractometers.

Tables have up to five degrees of freedom, with fully motorised pitch, roll & yaw, vertical and lateral drives, with 3 tonne and 7.5 tonne load capacities available. Our tables are fully customised and tailored to the specific requirements of each beamline. EPICS software can also be supplied.

See the Experimental Equipment section on our website for more information.

Medium-length KB Mirrors

Medium KB Mirrors

IDT have developed a novel Medium-length KB Mirror system for the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) at the APS. Two systems are installed on DCS, in the ID-E & D stations.

The system is an evolution of our highly successful Small KB Mirror system and features trapezoidal mirrors in a two-moment elliptical bender for sub-μm focusing, with a 840mm length horizontal mirrors allowing the full APS horizontal source size to be captured and focused.

See the Medium KB Mirrors section on our website for more information.
